AN EDUCATION: THE HITCHER

imageI don’t know what has gotten into me lately but I feel the urge to watch my favourite road movies. Maybe it is because of my recent rather disappointing viewing of Drive. I am probably looking for confort in them which I am sure I will find a great deal of in Mad Max, the next film I’ve got lined up.

The first has been The Hitcher. I am of course not talking about the remake but about the original - released in 1986 - starring my dear Rutger Hauer in the title role. If I ever drew up a list of my favourite movies ever, THE HITCHER would definitely be in it. Not only does it include Rutger Hauer in its cast but also Jennifer Jason Leigh with whom Haeur was with in Paul Verhoeven’s Flesh+Blood, the film that would certainly culminate at the top of my list. I owe to this film my discovery of C. Thomas Howell. It goes almost without saying that I saw E.T when I was a kid but I did not spotted him in it back then, knowing nothing about actors and directors at such a young age. So it is with The Hitcher that I really found out about him and subsequently of his part in the movie that defined the 80’s: Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders. Having all these talented individuals in the film was nevertheless not the only reason why I felt under a spell watching The Hitcher.

You can imagine how pleased I am about this and how fast I run in the streets to be sure to be there on time to catch all the trailers they show before the film. No matter how old I get, I know I will never get bored of sitting in a cinema, eating pop-corns and enjoying this feeling of excitment that comes from waiting for the movie to begin. I guess it is in my DNA as I know that my dad literally grew up in my grand-father’s cinema in Alger. I have no doubt about the joy that the whole experience will keep on providing me

But, to be honest, something has been worrying me: I have lost my faith in Hollywood. I talk about Hollywood because I love American movies. I have absolutely no shame about it. Why should I ? But this is another debate I don’t intend to get into here. So you see I should be beyond glad to see for free all the Hollywood movies that are out this summer but honestly I am not. I am not because I have this scary feeling that I won’t like them. Worse, that I won’t care about them. I have stopped hating movies since that big disappointment that Black Swan was for me.
